Cheese Donuts Are Most Definitely Not Subpar

Melly Sutjitro

When her sister is away for a business trip, 23-year-old Ellie Maharani agrees to look after her nieces and discovers on the first day of school that her sister’s PTA leadership is under attack. Ellie might not know much about PTA, but nobody steals her sister’s presidency from under her nose. She volunteers to sit in as an acting chairperson, unaware that the job comes with a condescending yet attractive PTA co-captain who criticizes everything she does, including her choice of donut.

The last thing Dion Saputra needs is more work outside his ER job, but refusing his old school’s request would incite a PTA war. With a prominent musical gala on the way, any mistakes, however small, would reflect badly on Dion’s uncle, the Principal. Dion would do anything for the man who has raised him since his father died, even if it means playing nice to the clueless co-captain who thinks cheese donuts are better than Mochaccino.

Between meetings and rehearsals, stolen kisses and an orchestrated PTA coup, they begin to realize that maybe, just maybe, they don’t despise each other’s guts?

“What a fantastic debut! Cheese Donuts Are Most Definitely Not Subpar is the reluctant-allies-to-lovers romance novel of my dreams. Melly Sutjitro effortlessly combines the crackling tension of forced proximity with the soft emotion of two people who choose each other despite their rocky start. Ellie and Dion will be in your heart long after you’ve finished reading.”

“A delicious debut! The charming wit had me smiling all the way through. Featuring fiercely loyal characters you can’t help falling for, CHEESE DONUTS ARE MOST DEFINITELY NOT SUBPAR serves up sparkling banter and plenty of rom-com shenanigans. While the best donut might be up for debate, there’s no question Melly Sutjitro’s debut is a winner.”

Fifteen-year-old Ben Leung can’t believe a girl like Kai Gupta would want to be his friend, let alone his girlfriend. They have absolutely nothing in common. He’s Chinese; she’s British Indian. He’s a Star Trek nerd; she’s a model. When Kai is offered a modeling career that requires her to move overseas, she persuades Ben to come along. They hatch a plot. They pinky promise. Everything is running according to plan… until it isn’t.Can a young love survive 7,235 miles between Hong Kong and Los Angeles? From the author of MY LEA and I WON’T BREAK comes a geeky and tender story about falling in love, fulfilling family duties, and chasing dreams.

Reviews

“LOVED this contemporary #ownvoices romance! I am such a sucker for the nerd + beautiful girl trope, but I’m often disappointed because the majority of the time, the nerd ends up being this mega-hot guy that’s smart and has glasses as opposed to being a true nerd. In this case, I was not disappointed, because Ben is the epitome of a Trekie. All the Star Trek references were priceless, and I especially loved the mall scenes where Ben brings Kai to all his favorite hobby stores to browse for action figures and other memorabilia. The other thing I loved was how unabashedly Asian this story was, with both Ben and Kai being bilingual (it was adorable how Ben was self conscious about his English), yet the story is not American-centric at all. Hong Kong in all its glory is front and center, including all the delicious food it has to offer. Having been to Hong Kong numerous times, I felt the depiction of the place and its people were wholly authentic. I would highly recommend this love story to anyone who wants witty banter, swoony romance and a change from the usual formulaic romances.”

Lea and Andrew’s story continues in this sequel to My Lea. From the city of San Francisco, the tale journeys on to the other part of the world: Jakarta, Bali, and Tokyo. It’s been five years since Andrew walked out of his apartment and left Lea in America. Five long years without any single contact. Andrew is now a twenty-eight-year-old man who just inherited his father’s business empire and is about to marry the granddaughter of the wealthiest man in Singapore. At twenty-four, Lea is in the early process of sorting out her life and career back in her home country. When Andrew’s father passed away, they are reunited again for the first time since America. Like it or not, they are forced to revisit their past and deal with their unfinished business. For most people, love is the answer to everything. But Lea and Andrew’s love is far from ordinary. Theirs is tainted by sin and guilt. And anger. Lots of anger. What happened five years ago that made Andrew leave? What happened after Twin Peaks? What happened to their baby? Told in both past and present events, I Won’t Break tests the limit of love when faced with grief and heartbreak, discovers the true power of forgiveness, and explores the meaning of second chances.

Reviews

“This almost broke me. My fist was stuffed in my mouth the whole time. It was excruciating; I hardly slept last night, I kept worrying about Andrew and Lea. I wanted to scream at them to stop. It was like watching a traffic accident in slow motion and there’s nothing you can do but watch helplessly from the sidelines. ‘I Won’t Break’ was a great second instalment to ‘My Lea’. I was spellbound by the Asian culture, by Andrew and by Lea. What wonderful families and what a gorgeously lavish love story.”

E. Mellyberry is a force to be reckoned with. This woman has undoubtedly tore my heart out of my chest too many times to count. More times than any author has before. Her storytelling is beyond magnificent and I would have been missing an important part of my life if I hadn’t stumbled upon her work. “

” “Love was an anti-gravity force. Love was an art of falling and floating, but never crashing. Love shot her into the sky, then let her fall, absolute falling, and she kept falling and falling. She was falling… defenseless and fast.”

I simply loved the storyline of this book and how it was carefully constructed. It’s dark, complex, and deeply emotional. It was also unpredictable. All throughout the book, I made different guesses about Andrew’s past but none of them were correct after all.”

“Reading Mellyberry’s novel was a roller coaster ride of emotion, and I was crying like a baby by the time the end came around. It is a novel that has pierced my heart, and one that I will never forget and keep going back to, despite the emotional turmoil it brings. I am honestly surprised that this novel hasn’t been published on a a larger scale, and it is truly a hidden gem. If you are looking for a new romance author to send you into a whirlwind of emotion, then look no further than My Lea. The best books are those that tantalize your emotions so much that they change you, and this book is certainly among them.”
